AI scammers outperform humans when it comes to building trust

Researchers from four universities found that AI chatbots can build trust and conduct long-term deception in text-based scams more effectively than humans, leading to higher victim compliance. In a study simulating 'pig butchering' scams, AI outperformed humans in persuading victims to take actions indicative of trust, such as downloading apps or playing games.
