California Legislature Passes Independent AI Safety Verification Bill

California's legislature approved SB 813 on August 30, 2026, mandating the Government Operations Agency to designate independent organizations to audit AI safety risks. These auditors must be impartial and meet criteria set by the agency by January 1, 2028. The bill now awaits Governor Gavin Newsom's decision.
