Energy Department Wants Data Centers to Stop Draining the Grid During Brutal Heat Wave

The U.S. Department of Energy authorized PJM, the grid operator for 13 states and D.C., to require data centers to switch to backup power during a severe heat wave to prevent blackouts. This move leverages over 35 gigawatts of unused backup generation amid rising electricity demand from cooling and AI data centers.
