NASA and IBM jointly developed the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, an open-source AI system that excels at identifying lunar ice and craters, outperforming existing models like Microsoft's SwinV2-B. The model was validated by correctly detecting a recent SpaceX Falcon 9 crash site on the Moon. They also released a dataset for researchers to build their own lunar AI models.
